Introduction to Drafting and Composition on EZ Plate
ONE – Use tracing paper to compose a picture
-
Because engraving printing will have the problem of “pattern and text” being reversed left and right, you can use tracing paper to proof the draft. Then turn it over and draw on the plate.
-
Methods of transferring the pattern onto the plate:
A. Draw the front pattern with a dark pencil (above 6B).

After turning to the back, use a spoon or your fingernail to press in circular motions.

B. Place carbon paper under the tracing paper, and trace onto the plate with a soft or colored pencil.

C. Apply crayon on the front of the tracing paper (instead of carbon paper), then turn it over and trace.

-
Comparison of the three transfer methods:
-
Left (Crayons): thicker lines
-
Middle (Carbon paper): clear and delicate
-
Right (Direct engraving rubbing): light pencil

TWO – Use ordinary paper (autotype paper) to compose the picture
1.Use an oil-based pen to trace the image once, then turn the paper over to obtain the reversed image.

2.Methods of transferring the pattern onto the plate:
A. Direct engraving method:
If using negative engraving (blank lines), fix the drafting paper on the EZ Plate and use a ball pen to engrave directly with pressure (as shown in the example), pressing into lines.
(You can sprinkle prickly heat powder to preview the engraving status.)

B. Place carbon paper under the autotype paper and trace onto the plate with a soft or colored pencil.
(Refer to the previous method.)

C. Apply crayons on the front of the proofing paper (instead of carbon paper), then turn it over and trace.
(Refer to the previous method.)
THREE – Use banana oil / toluene for rubbing transfer
-
If using photocopied artwork, you can transfer the image with banana oil or toluene.
Note: Banana oil and toluene are volatile and toxic (toluene is more toxic).
Please wear gloves, avoid direct contact, wash hands after use, wear a mask, and work in a ventilated environment.
-
Method of transferring the pattern:
A. Place the toner side of the photocopy facing the plate (no need to reverse).
Dip a small amount of banana oil (or toluene) with tissue or cloth, then pat and press from the back to transfer the image onto the plate.

FOUR – Copy the master pattern
-
To create multiple plates for color registration, you can use transparencies to reverse the master pattern.
-
Method of transferring the pattern:
A. Apply ink to the roller on the engraved plate.
B. Cover with transparencies and print using a baren to transfer the ink.
C. Move the transparencies to a blank plate for registration, press with a baren, then peel off the transparencies.
